Just the other day, I asked my Malay friend why
do people protest against the teaching of Maths
and Science in English (PPSMI).
According to him, one of the reasons was that
students and teachers could not cope
with the English language especially the problem was
more serious in RURAL areas like in Kelantan
and Terengganu.
In urban areas or in big towns like Kuala Lumpur
parents could afford to send their children to
tuition classes in English but not in kampong
where there is shortage of English teachers.
But ironically, those street protesters against the PPSMI
were all from the URBAN areas of Kuala Lumpur
whereas the gatherings from Kelantan
(RURAL) were in support for Maths and
Science in English.!!!
Moreover, recent SPM results showed 80% of students around
the country took their Maths and Science exams in English.
So where is the logic to protest against PPSMI?
